News - Interplastic 2015. Focus on import substitution.

16.02.2015

The fluctuating exchange rate has a direct impact on the Russian market for polymers and resins, packaging machines, process equipment, finished packaging products and containers made from different materials. However, experts do not think that it may cause market stagnation in the near future — Russia and neighboring countries demonstrate high demand for investment and are very interested in advanced machines and mechanisms, process equipment and plants, high-tech materials. The main objective of Russian manufacturers is to improve their competitive advantages to get focused on import substitution. This objective perfectly summarizes the results of the Interplastic Exhibition that took place in Moscow at the end of January.

Vera Friche representing the Recycling and Packaging Equipment Department of the Association of German Machine-Builders assesses the current situation from several perspectives: “At present, the Russian market has a lot of projects, which offer excellent opportunities to German machine-builders. Investment should be made in food and packaging production to substitute imported goods — that situation had taken place before the embargo was imposed. The weakening ruble and increasing interest rates on loans caused a lot of problems Russian business people had to face. Some German businesses operating in the related industry had to offer their long-time customers their own financing models. The demand for certain solutions in revamping projects for energy-generating units and second-hand machinery has increased.”

At the same time, many market experts think that the current situation offers outstanding prospects for strengthening positions of large companies.

“We think that the weakening of the ruble may have a positive effect on our industry. Weak players will have to leave and the market leaders operating in the polymer sector will be able to secure their frontline positions and receive orders instead of the companies that left,” Vyacheslav Ryabov, head of the representative office of MACCHI Russia, shares his opinion.

The business program of the Exhibition included discussions, which were focused on recycling of plastics and bioplastics.

Pure facts: The Interplastic 2015 Exhibition was visited by 19,000 specialists from Russia, CIS and neighboring countries. The exhibition venue displayed 950 innovative products from 35 countries.
